2017 LPGA Standard Bearer - Saturday, September 2

Columbia Edgewater CC, Portland, Ore.

September 2, 2017

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for Oregon Junior Golf on SATURDAY, September 2

Every year the Tournament Golf Foundation, Inc. provides us the opportunity to carry the standards (over/under signs) inside the ropes at the LPGA Portland Classic. This event is our PRIMARY fundraising activity each year allowing us to reach over 1000 juniors in Oregon and SW Washington with our programming.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

This is a really neat opportunity for our juniors that allows them to get up close and personal with the best female golfers in the world!  This volunteer job includes maintaining the over/under boards (THE STANDARD) and carrying it around the golf course to allow the public in attendance to know who is in your group and how well they are playing.

The standard weighs approximately 15 pounds and a holster is provided that you are able to rest the standard in.  Additionally, when you arrive at each green there is a pole where you can secure it while the players in your group finish each hole.  Each group will have an experienced walking scorer that will accompany you throughout the round.

WHAT SHIFTS ARE AVAILABLE AND CAN I WALK WITH A FRIEND OR PARENT?

When you sign up for this event you are signing up for one or more days (Thurs, Fri, Sat, and/or Sun) and what time you will be able to volunteer.  Additionally, you will be asked if you would like to volunteer alone or with a friend or parent.  Due to tournament regulations, a maximum or two people are allowed to do this job at one time.

Each shift will last approximately 4 hours and 45 minutes and your starting times will be sent out via e-mail and posted on the Junior Golf Schedule two days before the event.  When you receive your starting time you should plan to be at the volunteer tent at least 45 minutes before your time.  OJG Volunteers and Staff will be onsite to prepare you for your role.

In general, on Thursday and Friday if you select a morning shift, plan to arrive at the course between 6:30am and 8:30am.  If you select an afternoon shift, plan to arrive at the course between 11:30am - 1:30pm.

In general, Saturday and Sunday starting times normally run from 7:00am - 2:00pm. Therefore morning times will range from 6:30am arrival - about 10:00am and afternoon volunteers should plan to arrive between 10:00am - 1:30pm.

Again, your exact starting time/group will be forwarded via e-mail and posted on the Junior Golf Schedule on Tuesday evening, August 29th.  When you find your time you should plan to be present in the volunteer tent, no later than 45 minutes prior to your time.

WHAT IF I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO?

During your round, your walking scorer will be with you all along the way.  If you are unsure ask the walking scorer.

Juniors are expected to follow any instructions provided to you by the walking scorer. Under no circumstances may you use any electronic device (this includes Cell Phones and music players).  Juniors that fail to follow the instructions of a walking scorer or are observed using an electronic device during the round will be removed from the course and be subject to discipline under the Oregon Junior Golf Code of Conduct - including suspension from playing in future Oregon Junior Golf Events.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR/BRING?

All volunteers will be provided a free Oregon Junior Golf Shirt to wear and will receive a free lunch.  You will want to bring good walking shoes (your tennis shoes are recommended).  Bottled water is also available from the Tournament Volunteer Tent as well as on the course.  When you check-in you will also be able to leave any extra items you may have brought with you.  Please do not plan to store valuables as we will have a lot of activity in the volunteer booth throughout the event.

CAN I COME EARLY/STAY LATE TO WATCH THE TOURNAMENT?

Certainly! All volunteers will receive a free day pass for each day you volunteer. You can hang out all day, just be sure to pay attention to the time so you do not miss your starting time!

WHERE SHOULD I PARK?

Parking is provided free of charge for volunteers - Oregon Junior Golf will e-mail specific instructions closer to the event.  Additionally, parents can drop off juniors near the main entrance - this information will also be e-mailed out during the event week.

CAN I EARN COMMUNITY SERVICE?

Many schools require community service hours and each year dozens of our junior golfers earn credit for their time volunteering on the course.

I WANT TO CARRY THE STANDARD!  HOW DO I SIGN UP?

If you already have a player account with Oregon Junior Golf, just log-in to
your account and register like any other tournament.

If you are new to our program, you'll still need to click the log-in link on the left but you'll
need to sign-up as a "new user."  If you have any questions, just call us at
503-981-4653 x227 or e-mail juniorgolf@oga.org and we'll be happy to help.

Thank you again for your interest in volunteering and helping Oregon Junior Golf raise funds to continue our operations.  This is a really neat opportunity and we hope you can find the time to volunteer and at the same time get inside the ropes with the best female golfers in the world!

After registering, am I guaranteed the shifts I registered for?

While Oregon Junior Golf does not know the exact field size in advance (nor the size of the field after the cut is made Friday evening), for this reason, we cannot guarantee that you will be asked to volunteer for each shift registered.  It is highly likely each shift you volunteer for, you will have an assignment, and for this reason OJG requests you plan on working all shifts you register for.  We will do our best to accommodate all who wish to volunteer.
